Playing Dress Up

I got sorta dressed up a couple times lately. First for the adoption hearing:

And then the very next day to perform a wedding for friends:

It’s nice to get all cleaned up sometimes. It’s not my default setting, but it works. And it’s really strange to me how differently people treat you when you’re wearing a suit. It doesn’t make a lot of sense. A horrible person can buy fancy clothes and put them on. And I know a lot of amazing, powerful people who refuse to wear “fancy” clothes. Yet, we automatically trust people wearing the agreed uniform of our society.

How often do you get all dressed up? Why? And how do people treat you differently?

Necessary Risks

(long wait in exam room at pediatrician)

Me: “So this Well Visit flyer says boys around age 10 may start taking unnecessary risks.”

(boy jumps off exam table onto his face)

Danger Monkey, age 10: “Owww.”

Me: “I have no idea what they are talking about.”

(boy rides rolling exam stool into wall with his face)

DM: “I don’t know, either.”

(boy climbs wall, hits face on window sill as he falls)

Me: “Yeah, it’s a big mystery.”

Looking Up

Gate Attendant, looking down at computer terminal: “Yes?”

Me: “I was just wondering… I know you’re busy, but if it’s not too much trouble… I’m in 21B, and row 21 is full… but it looks like row 24 has two open seats next to each other, so I was…”

GA: (still looking down) “Sir, we don’t change seat assignments at the gate.”

Me: “Well, I was just checking because…”

GA: (still looking down) “Sir. I can’t help you.”

(long pause)

Me: “I’m a REALLY big guy.”

GA: (looks up)

GA: (looks up farther)

GA: (slow blink)

GA: “Row 24, you say?”
